Petrobras Taps Cardano Blockchain for Sustainable Fuel Claims Tracking
Petrobras, the Brazilian state-controlled energy giant, has partnered with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs to test blockchain technology in tracking environmental claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.
The SAF project uses a Book-and-Claim model to separate the environmental benefit associated with SAF from the physical fuel. This allows airlines to claim the benefit when the fuel is used elsewhere, preventing double-counting of environmental benefits through blockchain certificates.
Cardano will record the origin of each environmental benefit, its recipient, and whether it has already been claimed. The system also includes a passenger-facing application that enables travelers to input their destination and departure airports to calculate an SAF allocation and receive a certificate linking the allocation to the underlying fuel certificate.
The second project applies blockchain tracking to Petrobras' Diesel R, a fuel containing renewable material. This model creates checkpoints across the value chain, converting information into an immutable record of the fuel's lifecycle.
