Petrobras Taps Cardano for Eco-Friendly Fuel Tracking
Brazil's state oil and gas company Petrobras is testing the Cardano blockchain platform in two research projects to track data related to aviation and diesel fuel. The goal of implementing this technology is to document the origin of the environmental benefits of the fuel, prevent double counting of emissions reductions, and monitor the movement of fuel at all stages of its life cycle.
The first project concerns sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), an alternative to traditional jet fuel with a reduced carbon footprint. The second project focuses on Diesel R, a diesel partially made from renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils and animal fats. With Cardano, Petrobras will be able to document the origin of the environmental benefit, its recipient, and the moment of use.
Petrobras already has experience using blockchain technologies, having previously explored the possibilities of blockchain and cryptocurrencies within a project for Bitcoin mining and tokenization. The application of such solutions for optimizing business processes and transitioning to low-carbon strategies was also studied.
