Petrobras Taps Cardano for Sustainable Fuel Tracking
Petrobras, the Brazilian state-controlled energy company, is testing Cardano's blockchain technology to track environmental attributes of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable-content diesel. The SAF project uses Cardano to record ownership and retirement of verified environmental attributes, while the Diesel R application connects records generated during production, transportation, and consumption.
The SAF pilot separates verification of the underlying fuel from subsequent ownership of its environmental benefit. Fuel is produced, then verified against relevant requirements before entering the system. The claim is tokenized as CS-SAF tokens on Cardano with standardized metadata, allowing for transferable environmental attributes under the Book-and-Claim model.
The limitation of this approach is that Cardano cannot determine by itself whether the original emissions measurement is correct. However, it preserves what happens to verified information after it enters the system, creating an auditable chain of custody for environmental claims.
