Petrobras Taps Cardano to Track Cleaner Jet Fuel and Diesel
Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy company, has partnered with Cardano to track the origins of cleaner jet fuel and diesel. The project, announced on September 30, aims to provide a transparent and verifiable record of the fuel's production, transportation, and use. This is a crucial step in closing the double-counting gap in green fuel, where an airline can pay for the environmental benefit of sustainable aviation fuel even when the physical fuel is burned elsewhere.
The project targets a known weakness in how sustainable fuel is sold. Under a book-and-claim model, an airline can pay for the environmental benefit of sustainable aviation fuel even when the physical fuel is burned elsewhere. The Cardano blockchain will record where a benefit originated, who received it, and when it was claimed, ensuring that a single emissions claim can only be made once.
The Cardano Foundation's chief executive, Frederik Gregaard, noted that Brazil has been a consistent adopter of Cardano, and that the partnership with Petrobras is a significant step forward. Rafael Fraga, the foundation's LATAM business development lead, emphasized that the energy transition will depend as much on trust as on new fuels, and that a public blockchain offers a shared, verifiable foundation for energy markets.
