Petrobras Tests Cardano-Based Applications for Cleaner Fuel Tracking
Brazil's state-controlled oil company Petrobras is testing Cardano-based applications to record environmental claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel and Diesel R. The aim of this research is to improve traceability for cleaner fuels in Brazil.
The Cardano Foundation announced two projects with Petrobras, focusing on recording environmental claims tied to fuel production and use. One project covers sustainable aviation fuel, which can be used in existing aircraft and airport systems, while the other focuses on Diesel R, a Petrobras fuel partly made from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils or animal fats.
The Cardano-based application records where each benefit originates, who receives it, and when it is claimed, creating a chain of custody intended to stop the same emissions reduction from being counted twice. This addresses the book-and-claim model, under which an airline can buy the environmental benefit of sustainable fuel even when the physical fuel is used elsewhere.
The diesel-tracking model could help companies report Scope 3 emissions more accurately, supporting compliance as industrial users face intensifying demands for documented carbon impacts.
