Petrobras Tests Cardano Blockchain for Cleaner Fuel Tracking
Brazilian energy company Petrobras is experimenting with Cardano blockchain technology in two research projects aimed at improving the tracking and provenance of lower-emission fuels.
The projects, developed with the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs, focus on creating verifiable information about the origin, movement, and environmental attributes of fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Diesel R.
The SAF project uses a book-and-claim model to separate physical fuel consumption from environmental benefits, preventing double counting of emissions reductions.
The digital records created in the system include checks against relevant aviation standards, certificate verification, tokenization, and retirement mechanisms to ensure accuracy and prevent misuse.
The Cardano Foundation has highlighted the potential relevance of this system to Scope 3 emissions, which cover indirect emissions occurring throughout a company's value chain.
