Petrobras Tests Cardano Blockchain for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Tracking
Brazil's state-controlled energy company Petrobras is collaborating with the Cardano Foundation to develop innovative solutions for tracking and verifying the environmental benefits of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The SAF project aims to address a common problem in the industry, where the buyer of a fuel's environmental benefit may be different from the buyer or user of the fuel itself.
Petrobras developed the SAF platform with PUC-Rio University's Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation. The platform represents SAF environmental attributes as standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano, which can be created, transferred, checked, and retired to prevent double-counting.
The Book-and-Claim model used in this project allows airlines, companies, or passengers to receive the benefits of SAF even when it is produced or used elsewhere. The digital record traces the allocation back to the original fuel certificate, preventing misuse and ensuring transparency throughout the value chain.
