Phemex Perpetuals Show Volatility in Pre-IPO Contracts Over Labor Day Weekend
A new type of financial instrument has emerged in the crypto market: TradFi perpetuals. These contracts track traditional assets such as stocks, indices, and commodities and never expire. Phemex lists 64 of these tokenized equity, index, and commodity perpetuals, including pre-IPO contracts.
Unlike traditional futures contracts, which have a quarterly expiry and settlement date, perpetuals do not expire and are tethered to a reference index instead. This mechanism is new to many traders, so it's essential to understand how perpetual futures contracts work before trading them.
The article explores the behavior of these contracts during the Labor Day weekend, when US markets were closed for 89.5 hours. During this time, equity and commodity perpetuals were relatively quiet, moving less than Bitcoin. However, pre-IPO contracts behaved differently, with OPENAI-USDT and SPCX-USDT experiencing significant price movements.
The article explains that tokenized equity perps reference a cash market that is shut during the weekend, resulting in low volatility. In contrast, pre-IPO contracts have no primary market to close, leading to continuous price discovery.
