Philippine Court Freezes Crypto Wallets in Flood-Control Corruption Probe
A Philippine court has frozen 25 cryptocurrency wallets linked to an unnamed 'prominent lawmaker' in connection with an investigation into corruption in government flood-control projects.
According to the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), investigators found probable cause to believe that the assets were related to alleged plunder, and the Court of Appeals issued a freeze order on September 21.
The AMLC has not disclosed the identity of the lawmaker or the crypto holdings, but noted that the suspected funds moved through multiple people and financial channels, including corporations, banks, a money service business, and a virtual-asset platform.
This case highlights the complexity of tracing cryptocurrency transactions, especially when they involve regulated platforms and intermediaries. The investigation also shows why moving funds into crypto does not necessarily end the paper trail.
