Philippines Arrests 244 in Crackdown on Illegal Offshore Gaming Scams
Philippine authorities have conducted their largest crackdown this year on illegal offshore gaming operators, arresting 244 foreign workers, mostly Chinese nationals, on the island of Mindanao. The raids, carried out by military and law enforcement agencies, targeted two sites where criminal gangs are suspected of using Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) as a front for various crimes, including human trafficking, fraud, and murder.
At the first location, 110 Chinese citizens, two Cambodians, and a Hong Kong resident were detained. The second raid yielded 131 arrests, including Chinese nationals alongside citizens from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Authorities seized a significant amount of computer equipment, mobile phones, laptops, and SIM cards during the operations.
The Philippines banned POGOs in 2024 due to their association with serious crimes. A 2023 United Nations report highlighted the trafficking of hundreds of thousands of people across Southeast Asia into scam centers and other illegal online operations, with victims often coerced into promoting fraudulent schemes, including bogus cryptocurrency investments.
The arrested individuals are being investigated for potential human trafficking-related offences, with the remainder facing deportation. Immigration chief Joel Viado emphasized the Philippines' commitment to enforcing immigration laws and preventing the country from being used as a base for illegal activities. The Chinese embassy has also reached out to Philippine authorities for details on the case.
