Poland's MiCA Implementation Stalls Amid Presidential Veto
Poland's crypto regulatory framework remains in limbo after lawmakers failed to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a bill aimed at implementing the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) Regulation. The third attempt to pass the legislation fell short, with 241 votes in favor and 198 against, leaving Poland as the only EU member state without a functioning national framework for crypto regulation.
The vote on Friday was not enough to meet the required three-fifths majority needed to override Nawrocki's veto. The President had argued that lawmakers addressed only one of sixteen changes his office proposed in the legislation, and that passing bad law does not make it good simply because it passes multiple times.
Poland has missed the July 2026 deadline for implementing MiCA, which requires all EU member states to designate a regulatory authority. The lack of clear regulations leaves Polish crypto firms uncertain about licensing and enforcement. In contrast, the MiCA regulation already applies across the European Union.
