Politics Kills CLARITY Act as Senate Votes Down Bill

Share

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed what really killed the CLARITY Act in an interview. The Senate voted 49-50 against the bill, but Armstrong said it wasn't due to banks or stablecoin rewards that everyone was watching for months.

'This was really about politics at the end of the day,' Armstrong said. He explained that the White House had put a genuine ethics deal on the table, including real restrictions on the president and elected officials issuing or promoting tokens and memecoins.

The proposed bill required these individuals to park their holdings in a blind trust, with actual enforcement power handed to state attorneys general. Armstrong said he was surprised that some Democrats wanted more, but ultimately rejected the deal due to politics.

Armstrong pointed out that voting down the bill didn't strengthen ethics rules - it erased them altogether. With no CLARITY Act in place, individuals like Trump and Hunter Biden can continue to do what the bill aimed to stop.
