Polkadot Nominators Boost Validator Elections with Staked DOT
Polkadot's Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism relies on a network of validators and nominators to function. Validators run the nodes, while nominators supply the stake that helps those validators get elected.
Nominators are DOT holders who lock their tokens to back validators, with the network reading their backing to decide who produces blocks. This process is called bonding, and the DOT stays in the owner's account until it's unbonded.
The Polkadot nominator role has become increasingly popular as the number of idle DOT holders has risen. As of early October 2026, official chain data shows approximately 28,700 nominator accounts and 600 active validators.
A Polkadot nominator never runs a node and doesn't need technical skills, but they do need to perform regular checks on their chosen validators. The nominator shares in the rewards that validators earn, but if a validator breaks network rules, the nominators backing it can lose part of their stake.
The entry price for becoming a Polkadot nominator depends on the route. Direct nominating requires a minimum of 250 DOT, while nomination pools start at 1 DOT. Unbonding, which allows DOT holders to withdraw their tokens, takes 28 days.
