Polygon Brings Stablecoin Routing Behind Merchant Checkout
Polygon introduced Crypto Checkout on October 1, 2026, as a merchant payments product that brings stablecoins and other digital dollars into everyday checkout. This isn't just another crypto payment button; it aims to separate the asset and network a customer uses from the stablecoin a merchant prefers to receive.
The product is designed to work with existing crypto wallets, rather than requiring customers to create a Polygon-specific wallet to complete a purchase. It's an abstraction layer connecting existing payment rails, allowing merchants to set settlement in assets such as USDC and USDT.
The approach reduces fragmentation that might block a purchase even when the buyer has adequate funds. This parallels the broader shift toward using stablecoins as settlement infrastructure, also reflected in stablecoin-based payment and settlement rails.
