Polygon Permanently Removes 100 Million Tokens Through Community-Triggers

Polygon has permanently removed 100 million POL tokens from circulation through a community-triggered transaction. This move is part of the network's EIP-1559 system, which directs base fees toward its burn infrastructure rather than paying them to validators.

The Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal confirmed the completed burn on September 23, stating that the first 100 million POL was ready for permanent removal once new contracts completed Security Council approval and moved from testnet to mainnet.

This is not the first time Polygon has used its EIP-1559 burn mechanism, which it implemented in 2022. The network's fee routing changed again in March under PIP-82, with base fees now initially entering a routing address where eligible fees generated through specified agentic-commerce activity can be used for rebates.

The new deployment removes Polygon Foundation as the required executor for each burn, allowing any community member to trigger the process once eligible POL has accumulated. Further executions are planned on a quarterly basis.
