Polygon POL Migration Hits 99% as AggLayer v2 Unifies 35 Separate Chains
The Polygon POL migration has reached a milestone with 99% completion of converting MATIC to POL. This transition follows the deployment of AggLayer v2, which unified 35 separate chains and enabled interoperability across the ecosystem.
According to Polygon's history, MATIC was replaced by POL in September 2024 as part of an upgrade that changed the native asset from a capped supply of 10 billion to a dynamic emission model. Users on the Polygon PoS network saw an automatic conversion, while those holding MATIC on Ethereum or Polygon zkEVM had to perform a manual migration through the Polygon Portal interface.
The new tokenomics allocate 2% of annual emissions over a decade to support the network, with half going towards staking rewards for validators and the other half supporting the community treasury. This grant program is overseen by an independent board and aims to fund builders.
AggLayer v2 connects multiple chains through zero-knowledge proofs, providing shared liquidity and uniform security. The POL token supports this aggregated architecture by providing security across all connected chains, moving the network beyond a single proof-of-stake chain into a multi-chain ecosystem.
