Polygon Prepares Permissionless Burn of 100M POL Tokens
Polygon is preparing to deploy a permissionless contract that will allow anyone to burn 100 million POL tokens, according to Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal. This move would be a significant reduction in the token supply, removing roughly 83% of the tokens currently held by the base fee collector.
The proposed contracts are currently on testnet and awaiting final Security Council signatures. Once deployed to mainnet, the first call would destroy 100 million POL at once, with subsequent burns available for anyone in the community to trigger quarterly.
Nailwal said that Polygon's token has been deflationary since January 2026, meaning that new tokens issued through the protocol have not exceeded the number of tokens burned. However, whether POL becomes structurally deflationary depends on future fee burns exceeding new token issuance.
