Polygon Surpasses $3 Trillion in Stablecoin Transfers Amid Payment Infrastructure Boom
Polygon has reached a major milestone in its adoption as a payment infrastructure, surpassing $3 trillion in cumulative stablecoin transfer volume since September 2020. This achievement comes after a year of significant upgrades and expansions that have boosted the network's capacity and made it more appealing to companies like Revolut, Mastercard, PayPal, and Cash App.
The data shows that the network processed $933 billion in stablecoin transfers in 2025 alone, representing a 32% year-over-year growth. This trend continued into 2026, with over $741 billion already moved through the network. The accelerated adoption of Polygon as a payment solution can be attributed to several key upgrades, including the Ithaca upgrade and the launch of the Open Money Stack.
The Ithaca upgrade introduced automatic recovery in case of block producer failure and protections against transactions that could slow down the network. Additionally, the Open Money Stack provides regulated access to fiat in the United States through acquisitions like Coinme and Sequence. This infrastructure has undergone significant improvements, including a capacity increase to 5,000 transactions per second and changes to the fee mechanism to make costs more predictable.
