Primavera Pursues Control of Venezuelan Oil Fields Amid Fintech Forays

Share

Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of Coinbase and Paradigm, is using his investment firm Primavera to pursue control of three Venezuelan oil fields: Boca, Guico, and Guara. These fields are currently operated by Brazilian driller Alvorada Heavy Industries, which has invested around $30 million to restart inactive wells.

The existing contracts between Alvorada and the Venezuelan government are being reviewed by US and Venezuelan authorities, creating an opportunity for Primavera to compete for control of the assets. If the agreements are cancelled, Ehrsam's firm could potentially acquire operating rights over the physical infrastructure itself.

Primavera is also exploring fintech and digital payment opportunities in Venezuela, with Ehrsam having met with senior Venezuelan and US officials to discuss these initiatives. This move represents a significant shift for crypto-native capital, which has traditionally focused on tokenized representations of real-world assets rather than acquiring direct ownership of physical infrastructure.
