Private Credit Defaults: A Chasm of Uncertainty Plagues Market

The private credit market is plagued by inconsistent default rates, raising concerns among investors about risk and transparency. According to Fitch Ratings, the trailing twelve-month default rate for US private credit hit 6.3% through August 2026, while managers reported rates ranging from 1-2%. This significant gap highlights a fundamental issue in the market: different institutions define 'default' differently.

The discrepancy arises from varying methodologies used to track defaults, which can obscure deterioration and create uncertainty for investors. Loan agreements are negotiated bilaterally, with amendments happening behind closed doors. As a result, managers may classify credit events differently, making it difficult to compare default rates across funds.

Fitch's numbers show that small borrowers, particularly those with less than $20-25 million in EBITDA, are bearing the brunt of stress. Roughly 12% of these smaller credits traded below 90 cents on the dollar in Q2 2026. This concentration adds another dimension to sectoral default rates, which reached near 10% for healthcare providers and industrial/manufacturing companies.

For institutional investors committed to the asset class, this means asking managers about their definition of defaults and comparing it against rating agency methodologies. The truth likely lies somewhere between the rosiest and grimmest numbers reported by different sources.
