Prysm Updates Client to Support 200M Gas Limit for Sepolia Test
Prysm, a leading Ethereum consensus client, released a critical update on October 5 to address a missing feature before the Glamsterdam upgrade's activation on the Sepolia testnet. The patch, version 7.2.1, ensures that validators can automatically propose blocks with a 200 million gas limit, a significant increase from the previous 60 million limit. The update was necessary because the earlier version 7.2.0, released on September 28, had scheduled the fork but omitted the gas-limit change, which could have diluted the test's effectiveness.
The higher gas limit allows the Sepolia testnet to handle more than three times the activity per block, including additional transactions, stablecoin transfers, and complex applications. This change, however, also increases the hardware demands on validators, which is a key aspect of the test. The Sepolia fork is set to activate at 13:53 UTC on October 6, and validators running version 7.2.1 will automatically propose blocks with the new gas limit without any manual intervention.
The Sepolia testnet serves as a rehearsal for Ethereum developers, allowing them to experiment with changes using test tokens before implementing them on the main network. The previous Platåberget test provided initial insights, and the upcoming Sepolia test will determine if validators can consistently manage blocks with significantly larger gas limits. The results will influence the eventual capacity increase for Ethereum's main network, which is part of the foundation's broader Layer 1 roadmap.
Beyond the gas-limit schedule, the patch also enables partial data columns by default and modifies how builders are configured in the validator client. The main network upgrade has not yet been scheduled, and the Sepolia test results will play a crucial role in shaping the final capacity increase.
