Pudgy Penguins-backed Abstract to Shut Down After Losing Millions
Abstract, an Ethereum Layer 2 network focused on consumers, announced it will shut down its operations on December 15, 2026. The decision comes after facing challenges like stagnant growth, thin liquidity, a limited DeFi ecosystem, and low institutional adoption. Despite deploying over 144 apps and onboarding more than 400,000 users through partnerships with brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney, the project concluded that its model was unsustainable.
Igloo Inc., the parent company behind Pudgy Penguins, has been funding Abstract for the past 18 months but lost "tens of millions of dollars," according to CEO Luca Netz. The company will now redirect its resources toward Pudgy Penguins and its token, PENGU. In July 2024, Igloo raised over $11 million to develop Abstract, but ultimately decided against launching an Abstract token or continuing to fund the network.
Netz stated that launching a token without conviction would have been a disservice to the community. The shutdown was preceded by speculation fueled by reduced activity on Abstract's official account, reported departures of senior team members, and scrutiny of developer wallet activity. The shutdown comes shortly after another Layer 2 network, Blast, announced its winding down due to rising costs.
