Quantum Computing Threat Sparks Hope for Ethereum and Zcash to Surpass Bitcoin
The security of Bitcoin's network is at risk due to the threat of quantum computing. If a powerful enough quantum computer is developed, it could crack the encryption used by Bitcoin, allowing hackers to steal funds directly from wallets that have exposed their public keys.
This vulnerability affects over 34% of all Bitcoin and has sparked concerns among developers. To address this issue, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 361 aims to fortify the network against quantum computers, but its implementation is expected to take five years or more.
During this time, a major crisis for Bitcoin could occur, potentially leading to a rapid price drop and causing investors to flee to safer alternatives. Two cryptocurrencies that may benefit from such an event are Ethereum (ETH) and Zcash (ZEC), both of which have been working on post-quantum cryptography to ensure their security.
Zcash, in particular, has made significant strides in this area, with its Ironwood upgrade launched in July 2023 providing new shielded funds with a potential recovery path if there's a breach in the encryption. The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) expects to reach full post-quantum operational status within 12 to 18 months.
