Quantum Computing Threatens Cryptocurrency Market, Warns Expert
The cryptocurrency market is facing a potential threat from quantum computing, which could compromise its security. According to Quantum Xchange CEO Eddy Zervigon, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum may be the first targets of a quantum-powered cyberattack.
Zervigon compared cryptocurrencies to 'canaries in a mine,' suggesting that they will likely be the first sector affected by this transformation.
The current cryptographic system used by Bitcoin, which relies on elliptic curve cryptography, is not yet breakable by a cryptographically meaningful quantum computer. However, the development of such a machine is closer than previously thought, with experts predicting it could be available around 2029.
A recent study by Google researchers revealed that the number of physical qubits required to break this cryptographic system has decreased significantly, from previous estimates. This indicates the magnitude of the danger and how close we are to breaking it compared to previous predictions.
