Quantum Memory: The Game-Changing Device That Could Replace Bitcoin
Stefano Gogioso, a quantum computing lecturer at the University of Oxford and co-founder of quantum security firm Spooqy, has argued that the development of portable long-term quantum memory will be one of the most consequential milestones in quantum technology. This device is expected to power an entirely new class of applications, including quantum money, which is considered the ultimate incarnation of a digital store of value.
Gogioso states that current laboratory systems can only hold quantum states for seconds, making it difficult to implement quantum money practically. However, he believes that with the development of portable long-term quantum memory, this problem will be solved.
The lecturer argues that fault-tolerant quantum computers require the ability to keep fragile states alive at scale, which is what a quantum memory device provides. He also suggests that atom-based designs could store information in properties that nature already keeps isolated, making it possible to achieve long-term storage without needing cryogenic temperatures.
Gogioso's argument has significant implications for both Bitcoin and the development of quantum money. The lecturer states that the hardware required to break Bitcoin's signatures would also fuel quantum money, making it difficult to distinguish between the two.
