Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Transactions Get $250 Price Cut Thanks to AI
A recent competition to optimize the code behind quantum-safe Bitcoin transactions has resulted in a significant reduction in costs. The Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Optimization Challenge, run by StarkWare alongside Yukon Research and Eigen Labs, saw the estimated cost of building such a transaction fall from around $320 to roughly $67 in just one week.
The competition utilized AI models, including Opus 5 and Fable 5.1 developed by Anthropic, as well as OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, Grok 4.6, and Kimi, which led to dramatic progress in brute-force search optimization. This optimization is crucial for reducing the computational power required for quantum-safe transactions.
StarkWare emphasized that while this development is promising, it does not make Bitcoin quantum-safe on its own. The company advocates for a soft fork as the best long-term solution to protect against 'Q-Day,' the hypothetical point when quantum computers could break elliptic-curve cryptography securing wallets.
