Record Global M2 Triggers Catch-Up Trade in Bitcoin

The global money supply has reached a record milestone of $103 trillion, according to recent data. Meanwhile, Bitcoin's price has spiked 21% higher over the last seven days, reaching a weekly high above $81,000. Some market observers believe that Bitcoin might be playing catch-up with the massive liquidity parked inside the modern financial system.

U.S. M2 hit a record high of $23.16 trillion in August, and global measures pushed toward $103 trillion. Despite this, Bitcoin's price remains below its 2025 peak of $126,000, down by about 37%. The gap between global M2 and Bitcoin's price could present a 'catch-up' trade, where investors move their money from fiat to scarce assets like Bitcoin.

Historical Bitcoin price cycles suggest that this trade is possible. In the past, Bitcoin's price saw massive run-ups in 2017-2018 and 2020-2021, which coincided with the expansion of M2 and liquidity. However, new capital can be held in bank deposits and money-market funds for quite some time, and a strong dollar may choke off liquidity.

Market watchers will be watching U.S. M2, global M2, and flows into specific funds, including bitcoin ETFs. Treasury yields will also play a role as the return of the liquidity trade could appear within the next few weeks to months. However, it is essential to note that a record-setting global M2 does not automatically equate to higher Bitcoin price targets.
