Record Stock Highs Contrast with Bitcoin's Stagnation
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 reached record highs on September 6, driven by strong performance in AI-related stocks like AMD and Amazon. AMD climbed 2.8% following CEO Lisa Su's confirmation of robust chip demand, while Amazon rose 1.9%. Macroeconomic factors also played a role, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield dropping from 5.33% to 5.26% and Brent crude oil prices falling below $100, easing inflation concerns.
Despite the stock market's strong performance, Bitcoin remained range-bound between $84,000 and $87,000, down about 32% from its October 2025 peak of $126,200. Woofun AI noted that the crypto market has not fully benefited from the positive macroeconomic momentum seen in stocks. According to 21Shares, a monthly close above $88,000 could signal a trend reversal, while a drop below $81,000 might push prices further down to $71,300.
September has historically been a challenging month for Bitcoin, compounded by negative factors like the Federal Reserve's rate hikes and high Treasury bond yields. Despite these headwinds, Bitcoin rallied 6.2% last week, partly due to weak employment data that dampened expectations of further rate hikes. Analyst Benjamin Cowen suggests that yields may decline after the midterm elections, potentially boosting the market ahead of the Federal Reserve's October meetings.
Until yields fall further, Bitcoin's performance is expected to lag behind Wall Street. The divergence between the stock market and crypto assets highlights the ongoing tug-of-war between bulls and bears amid volatile macroeconomic data and the traditional September lull.
