Regulatory Clampdown Intensifies as SEC and CFTC Target Crypto Sector
US financial regulators have intensified their oversight of the crypto sector, clearing key regulatory hurdles and taking action against alleged scams. The SEC cleared a significant hurdle as crypto token buybacks surged to a record $638 million.
Meanwhile, the CFTC sued Cash FX Group over an alleged $950 million crypto-linked forex scheme. In a separate development, the CFTC updated its FAQs to permit commodities firms to invest customer funds in tokenized assets and adopt blockchain recordkeeping.
The Federal Reserve's proposed stablecoin rule has raised concerns among market participants, with some warning it could trigger a 48-hour liquidation run if enacted without sufficient transition periods. This has sparked debate about the need for stablecoins in the crypto ecosystem.
