Regulatory Foothold: ChangeNOW, CoinRabbit Report Challenges Crypto Privacy Focus
ChangeNOW and CoinRabbit have released a joint report on financial privacy in digital assets, highlighting the need for a more nuanced approach to regulation. The research, titled 'Financial Privacy in the Digital Age,' examines the use of crypto privacy tools, drawing data from various sources including TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and the U.S. Treasury Department.
The report argues that current regulatory focus is misdirected, targeting transactional privacy rather than the fiat off-ramp where crypto converts into spendable currency. It cites several examples of legitimate use cases for on-chain privacy, such as shielding high-net-worth individuals from physical extortion and targeted kidnapping, as well as humanitarian efforts in conflict zones.
The report also profiles two working examples of privacy architecture designed to preserve Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance: ChangeNOW's Private Crypto Transfers, which breaks the link between sender and receiver without pooling user funds, and CoinRabbit's custodial model using dynamic per-user deposit addresses.
