Republican Candidate Defends Bitcoin Mine Amid Controversy Over Noise Levels
Michael Carbonara, a Republican candidate for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, defended data centers during a campaign event in Florida. The move comes as he faces criticism from locals in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where a bitcoin mine linked to him has been the subject of controversy.
The mine in Dafter Township is being sued by Lake Superior Academy over noise levels, which have reached 70-75 decibels, comparable to a washing machine or blender. The school claims the noise makes it harder for students to learn and paused an expansion project due to the issue.
Carbonara's name appears on the permit for the mine, but he did not confirm his connection during the event. However, he alluded to having built a bitcoin mining operation and defended data centers, saying they can bring down energy costs. He also stated that power for the Dafter mine is provided by Cloverland Electric, a nonprofit utility co-operative.
The lawsuit between the owners of the bitcoin mine and the school remains ongoing in Chippewa County's 50th Circuit Court.
