Researchers Propose Bitcoin Privacy Without Soft Fork
A new proposal for Bitcoin privacy has been put forth by researchers at Alloc Init. Dubbed Shielded Bitcoin, it seeks to integrate Zcash-style shielded transfers into the existing infrastructure without requiring a soft fork of the base protocol.
The system would work by treating Bitcoin as an 'ordering layer' rather than enforcing new rules for privacy. Indexers, separate software components, would verify zero-knowledge proofs and confirm that underlying funds have not been double-spent.
Shielded Bitcoin draws from Zcash's architecture but differs in one fundamental way: it does not propose a separate shielded blockchain with its own consensus mechanism. Instead, it aims to plug a privacy system into Bitcoin's existing infrastructure using encrypted transaction artifacts and proof verification performed by external components.
