Researchers Propose Shielded Bitcoin for Enhanced Privacy
A group of researchers has proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a system that would allow users to conceal payment amounts and sender/recipient information without changing Bitcoin's network rules.
The proposal, modeled after Zcash, would store encrypted transfers on the Bitcoin blockchain but rely on separate software to verify them. This means a Bitcoin transaction could be confirmed even if the private payment failed its own checks.
Ordinary bitcoin transactions permanently expose amounts and addresses, making it easier for others to track payments associated with an address. Shielded Bitcoin would keep this data hidden.
The research is preliminary, with no launch date or mechanism for depositing and withdrawing BTC yet available. Critics point out visible fees, higher transaction costs, and reliance on a trusted cryptographic setup.
