Revolut Battered by Public Ransom Demands Amid Customer Data Breach
Revolut is dealing with the aftermath of a data breach that exposed customer information. The incident has led to multiple public ransom demands, with one group calling itself 'IAmNotAVillain' asking for $3 million in Monero (XMR) within 24 hours.
The group claimed it would sell the stolen records to other criminal groups if the demand wasn't met. However, Revolut has stated that it hasn't received any direct contact or demands from those responsible, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident.
An earlier group called 'Revolut Smilik' had demanded 10,000 Bitcoin (worth around $780 million at the time), significantly higher than IAmNotAVillain's current demand. IAmNotAVillain disputed this claim on its website, suggesting that a former associate may have received only a small sample of data before taking credit for the breach.
The Italian authorities are also investigating the incident, as it involves a government email account being allegedly used to obtain customer data. The National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate has joined the probe due to its suspected involvement in a computer system breach of public interest.
