Revolut Hit with $782M Bitcoin Ransom Demand After Data Breach
Revolut, a European fintech company, has been hit by a data breach after attackers impersonated a government agency and tricked Revolut into handing over customer records. The hackers published the data of high-profile clients on Telegram channels and demanded a ransom of 10,000 Bitcoin, worth more than $782 million.
The attack occurred when an unauthorized party sent a fake government request to access Revolut customer information using a legitimate email domain with valid technical authentication. Revolut staff processed the request as routine, unaware it was fraudulent.
The stolen data included passports, verification selfies, account statements, and IBANs of well-known clients, including tennis player Alexander Shevchenko and Gamdom CEO Felix Römer. The hackers warned that they would leak more customer data every day until Revolut pays the ransom.
