Riot Platforms Ditches Bitcoin Mining for AI Infrastructure
Riot Platforms has made a significant shift in its business strategy by selling 9,665 BTC in the first half of 2026 to fund its pivot from bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure. The company sold 4,300 BTC in Q2 alone, reducing its bitcoin treasury to 11,380 BTC.
This move is part of a broader industry trend as miners like Marathon sell large bitcoin holdings to fund growth and debt reduction. Riot's transformation from a mining-focused company to an AI infrastructure operator could potentially increase its valuation and reduce reliance on bitcoin sales in the future.
The company has signed a 20-year, 191-megawatt lease with AI firm Anthropic, which is expected to generate $9.1 billion in revenue through 2048. This highlights Riot's expansion into data center operations, further emphasizing its strategic shift towards AI infrastructure.
