Riot Secures $9 Billion Deal to Power Anthropic AI Data Center
Riot Platforms, a leading Bitcoin miner, has secured a massive deal with AI company Anthropic. The agreement will provide 191 megawatts of capacity from Riot's Rockdale, Texas campus to Anthropic for 20 years. According to Bloomberg, the deal is valued at around $9 billion, making it one of the largest agreements in the industry.
This move marks a significant expansion into AI and high-performance computing for Bitcoin miners. As previously reported by Cointelegraph, partnerships between AI companies and Bitcoin miners are necessary to address the power crunch constraining AI data centers. Riot's shares fell 5.4% on Monday but rose more than 21% in overnight trading.
Anthropic has also secured a separate deal with Bitcoin miner TeraWulf for a 20-year data center lease valued at $19 billion, struck just last month. This growing trend of Bitcoin miners expanding into AI and high-performance computing includes companies such as Bitdeer, CleanSpark, MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, Hut 8, and IREN.
