Ripple CTO Shatters Replication Myth: Network Effect Can't Be Duplicated
Ripple's Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz joined the ongoing debate about Bitcoin's value and replication at Binance Blockchain Week. He argued that copying Bitcoin's code does not replicate its network, echoing Changpeng Zhao's views on Bitcoin's utility.
The discussion began with a heated exchange between CZ and Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff. Schiff claimed that gold-backed tokens carry physical utility because they represent ownership of scarce commodities used across industries. Bitcoin, he said, derives its value from faith rather than practical use.
Zhao countered by pointing out the difficulties in dividing or verifying physical gold without specialized tools. He noted that Bitcoin can be transferred and verified instantly through the blockchain. Schiff responded that Bitcoin remains worthless to him because it cannot be used for anything, whereas gold has industrial demand.
Schwartz's intervention challenged the premise of replication entirely, asking how a new Bitcoin could be both new and exactly the same as the original. He pointed out that a replica may copy Bitcoin's code but cannot replicate its network effect.
