Ripple Launches Wall Street Swap Desk, Raising Central Banking Comparisons
Ripple's expansion into institutional financial markets has raised questions about its position within the payments, settlement, liquidity, and credit infrastructure. Versan Aljarrah, founder of Black Swan Capitalist, sees Ripple's latest move as a structure that resembles central banking functions.
Aljarrah notes that a central bank performs three key roles: issuing money, operating a settlement system, and standing between counterparties when credit is extended. He maps these functions onto Ripple's ecosystem, identifying RLUSD as the money component, the XRP Ledger as the settlement system, and Ripple Prime as the credit and institutional trading component.
The Delta One desk, which has gone live, presents another step in Ripple's broader expansion across institutional finance. Aljarrah characterizes XRP as 'the reserve asset at the center' of this structure, suggesting it occupies a foundational role within Ripple's infrastructure.
