Ripple has returned 200 million XRP to its escrow system, valued at $272 million at current prices. This move is part of the company's monthly ritual of unlocking and re-locking its token reserves.

The escrow system was established in December 2017, when Ripple deposited 55 billion XRP into time-locked smart contracts. The mechanism was designed to prevent market flooding and stabilize the price of XRP.

Each month, a maximum of 1 billion XRP becomes eligible for release. However, the company typically re-locks between 600 million and 800 million XRP back into escrow within days of the release, resulting in a net amount entering circulation between 200 million and 300 million XRP.

As of September 1, 2026, approximately 31.28 billion XRP remained locked in escrow, representing about 31% of the total supply. This represents a significant drop from the original 55 billion deposited nearly nine years ago.
