Ripple Powers Absa's Institutional Digital Asset Custody Service

South African bank Absa has launched an institutional digital asset custody service in partnership with Ripple. The platform, which utilizes Ripple's custody solution, provides secure and compliant custody services for institutional clients. According to Reece Merrick, Managing Director of Middle East and Africa at Ripple, this is a major milestone for institutional digital assets in Africa.

The Absa Digital Asset Custody service ensures that private keys are stored in secure hardware environments, using deterministic key generation and cryptographic recovery measures. The platform also integrates with the blockchain transaction technology of Ripple, providing clients with control over transactions, governance, and recoverability. While Absa has not shared a full list of available cryptocurrencies or tokenized assets, the platform is designed to provide security and compliance for institutional clients.

This announcement comes as South Africa rolls out cryptocurrency regulation in the country, with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) guidelines requiring authorization for crypto custody services. Ripple's expansion into Africa has also seen partnerships with other companies, including Chipper Cash, VALR, and Yellow Card.
