Ripple Prepares XRP Ledger for Quantum Risks with 2028 Deadline
Ripple is taking proactive steps to prepare its XRP Ledger for 'Q-Day', a hypothetical future where quantum computers become powerful enough to compromise the algorithms currently protecting wallets and signing transactions on most major blockchains. The risk stems from the fact that XRPL, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, utilizes cryptographic signatures vulnerable to Shor's algorithm.
Ripple emphasizes that such capability does not exist with today's quantum systems, but is refusing to wait for 'Q-Day' to arrive. Instead, the company aims to implement production-ready post-quantum signatures by 2028 through a four-phase plan.
The roadmap divides the transition into four phases: testing NIST-recommended algorithms in 2026, a hybrid period where new mechanisms operate alongside current signatures, and finally an XRPL amendment proposal to introduce native post-quantum signatures across the entire ecosystem in 2028. Ripple is also collaborating with Project Eleven to assess the validator, custody, network, and wallet infrastructure.
The XRP Ledger features a built-in key rotation mechanism, which allows users to rotate keys controlling their accounts without changing the XRPL address itself. In case 'Q-Day' arrives sooner than expected, the network could stop accepting classical signatures and mandate a transition to quantum-resistant accounts.
