Ripple Tied to UK Treasury Initiative, But It's Not an Endorsement
The UK Treasury has announced an initiative to rebuild wholesale financial markets using blockchain technology. Ripple is involved in this project, but it's essential to note that this isn't a partnership or endorsement of XRP (the token) by the government.
The Wholesale Financial Markets Digital Strategy, published on gov.uk, outlines a multi-year plan to tokenize wholesale finance, remove paper share certificates, and pilot a digital gilt instrument known as DIGIT. Ripple is one of several companies participating in a 54-firm UK tokenization taskforce, exploring the use case for tokenized repo markets.
This initiative aims to improve transparency and reduce operational costs by letting financial assets exist as tokens on shared ledgers. However, it's crucial to note that the Treasury document doesn't mention Ripple or XRP specifically, nor does it imply an exclusive selection of the company's technology for this project.
The City of London Corporation has confirmed that Chris Woolard CBE, a former Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) executive director, is leading this initiative as the Digital Markets Champion. The taskforce will focus on tokenized repurchase agreements and aims to run a live trial by spring 2027.
