Ripple's $1.25 Billion Bet on Institutional Crypto Adoption
Ripple's acquisition of Hidden Road for $1.25 billion has given birth to Ripple Prime, a prime brokerage business that operates as a multi-asset platform. This move makes Ripple the first crypto company to own and operate a global, multi-asset prime broker, with Hidden Road clearing more than $3 trillion annually for over 300 institutional customers across multiple asset classes.
Ripple Prime provides multi-asset clearing, cross-margining, portfolio financing, and risk-based financing across traditional and digital markets. This synergy between Ripple and Hidden Road is designed to support the adoption of digital assets, including XRP and RLUSD, by institutions.
The acquisition marks a significant expansion of Ripple's business beyond blockchain-based cross-border payments, which was its initial focus. Ripple now offers custody, stablecoin settlement, treasury services, prime brokerage, and payments, all aimed at driving utility, trust, and liquidity around XRP and the XRP Ledger.
XRP has experienced a substantial recovery in recent weeks, with the token rising from $1.10 to over $1.42 by September 6. However, the rally lost momentum in mid-September, with XRP retreating towards the $1.35-$1.37 range. The market is still watching activity among larger XRP holders and anticipating a critical procedural vote on the CLARITY Act scheduled for September 15.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has described XRP as the company's 'North Star' and stated that all its business efforts, including payments, prime brokerage, custody, stablecoins, and treasury services, are focused on driving utility, trust, and liquidity around XRP and the XRP Ledger. While Ripple Prime is a multi-asset platform, XRP remains an essential part of its institutional strategy.
