Ripple's Clarity Quest Hits Roadblock as CLARITY Act Fails in Senate

Ripple has been fighting for clarity in the US crypto market for years, but its efforts were recently set back by the failure of the CLARITY Act. The bill, which aimed to establish clearer rules for consumers and digital-asset companies, fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate on September 15.

Ripple called the vote a 'tremendous missed opportunity' and argued that the bill could have provided much-needed clarity for the industry. However, the company already has more certainty around its own XRP token, which was at the center of a high-profile lawsuit with the SEC in 2020.

The CLARITY Act was broader than just Ripple's concerns, aiming to establish clearer boundaries between securities regulation and commodity-market oversight. The Senate's failure to pass the bill leaves the question mark over how exchanges, brokers, tokenized markets, and other crypto businesses will operate under US law without a single market-structure framework.

The immediate market reaction showed that investors were paying attention, with XRP falling sharply around the failed vote. Regulators are still moving forward, however, with the SEC proposing Regulation Crypto Assets and the CFTC continuing to work within its existing authority.
