Ripple's October XRP Dump: 1 Billion Tokens Unlocked, But Circulating Supply May Not Rise
Ripple is preparing to release another 1 billion XRP tokens on October 1, marking its 10th scheduled unlock of 2026. This event will continue a monthly process that has been in place since Ripple introduced its escrow program in 2017.
The upcoming release follows nine previous XRP unlocks this year, with the most recent one happening just last month on September 1. On that day, Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP through three separate escrow transactions, keeping with the predictable schedule that has remained largely unchanged for years.
The XRP escrow system is designed to provide transparency over its token holdings. Each month, up to 1 billion XRP is unlocked, but Ripple typically doesn't release the full amount into circulation. Instead, it relocks most of the newly unlocked tokens in new escrow contracts, resulting in an actual increase in potentially circulating XRP averaging between 200 million and 300 million tokens per month.
Ripple has locked approximately 32 billion XRP in escrow since the program's inception, with roughly one-third of XRP's fixed maximum supply remaining under the escrow system. The timing of each release is enforced by the XRP Ledger, meaning tokens cannot be accessed before their scheduled unlock date.
