Ripple's XRP Escrow: Unlocking the Mystery Behind Monthly Releases

Ripple's XRP escrow system has been misunderstood by many in the crypto community. The system was created to make Ripple-controlled XRP supply more transparent and predictable.

In December 2017, Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into a series of cryptographically secured escrow contracts. These contracts were designed to release 1 billion XRP monthly, with the goal of making Ripple's XRP supply more predictable.

The system has continued long after its original 55-month schedule, with unused XRP being placed back into new escrow contracts. As of June 30, 2026, 32.6 billion XRP remained in on-ledger escrow, while Ripple reported a total of 37.66 billion XRP in holdings.

Ripple's monthly releases are not equivalent to immediate market sales. The company may use unlocked XRP for institutional sales, liquidity initiatives, investments, or other ecosystem purposes. Investors should focus on how much XRP is retained, distributed, or returned to escrow when assessing potential supply pressure.
