RippleX, the development arm of Ripple focused on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) infrastructure, has launched the ninth iteration of its Smart Escrow Devnet. This release marks a significant step toward the full deployment of programmable escrow features on the XRPL, which supports the XRP digital asset.

Mayukha Vadari, a senior software engineer at RippleX, described the update as a key milestone in the pathway to production. The latest Devnet release includes substantial architectural improvements, notably the migration of the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust. This shift aims to enhance memory safety, performance, and tooling. According to the development team, the new Rust-based framework has boosted performance by 30% to 50% for each host function call.

The update also standardized names for host functions, ledger fields, transaction engine result codes, and execution entry points, making the technology more production-ready. Vadari emphasized the ongoing progress in bringing programmable escrows to the XRPL, noting that the feature set is outlined in the XLS-100 proposal, which aims to introduce deeper programmability to the ledger.

Smart Escrow introduces a new layer of functionality to the XRPL, allowing users to attach WebAssembly programs to escrows to define custom release conditions. This could enable more complex arrangements, such as requiring third-party approval, compliance verification, or managing transactions like real estate purchases and auctions. The feature could release assets only upon approval, completion of compliance checks, or successful input of external data through an oracle that meets predetermined criteria.
