Robinhood Chain Ends Gas Rebate, Threatening Memecoin Market
The Robinhood Chain, which went live on July 1, 2026, will end its 90-day gas rebate period on September 29. This means that transactions sent from the Robinhood Wallet using Arbitrum's mainnet launch will start paying network fees in ETH again.
This change is significant for memecoins, which have thrived on the chain due to low transaction costs. Pons, a launchpad for new tokens, has collected over $151 million in fees since its inception and has seen an average of 10,000 new token creations per day. However, once gas fees are reinstated, this activity may dwindle.
The impact on investors is not price-related but rather liquidity-based. Memecoins rely heavily on thin pools, which can quickly evaporate if transaction counts fall. This can lead to a significant gap between quoted prices and actual exit prices, affecting larger positions more severely.
