Robinhood Chain Sees Meme Coin Boom and Bust in Months
Robinhood Chain, launched in July 2026, quickly became a hub for memecoin trading paired with tokenized stocks. Despite its initial purpose of tokenizing real-world assets, traders flocked to the platform to trade hybrid pairs, such as cat-themed memecoins paired with tokenized shares of real companies. At its peak in early September, daily trading volume for these pairs hit $443 million, surpassing the volume of direct stock token trading.
The surge was short-lived, however. Trading activity plummeted by 96% from its peak, coinciding with reports of coordinated rug-pull activity on the chain. One notable memecoin, CASHCAT, reached a market capitalization of $250 million on August 27 before the decline. Despite the drop in trading volume, the total value locked on the chain remained near $1 billion, indicating some level of sustained interest.
Robinhood Chain operates as an Ethereum layer-2 network on the Arbitrum Orbit stack, focusing on tokenized real-world assets like stock tokens. These tokens provide 1:1 price exposure to US equities and ETFs but are not available to US persons. The network does not have a native token, and gas fees are paid in ETH. The decline in trading activity raises questions about the durability of the platform's initial success and its long-term viability in the tokenization push.
